Sandwich - een broodje, of een boterham :) boterham is a slice of bread, but also what you lot call an open faced sandwich - een boterham met beleg.
Een broodje - that can be anything from a bun in any form, could be a ciabatta for instance, to a slice of bread with cheese or a clubsandwich.
Krentenbollen - raisin buns - are also a staples.

The thin slicing is actually a way to show off the quality of the meat. The better the meat, the thinner you can slice it, but then we take a few slices. I guess we have a more frugal culture here. And yeah, to stay slim it does help to NOT eat a pound of meat every day ;)

@André Oh, I agree it makes sense, the parser would totally flip out otherwise. It's just the juxtaposition of the curly brace and semicolon that looks odd to me. Most traditional C-ish languages don't do this sort of thing and the other scripting languages I usually deal with (Python, Ruby, etc) don't need semi-colons.

Don't worry, I'm not going go all namespace-backslash-hatemobile on it. ;)

What's weird about the semicolon? It's part of the assignment and has nothing to do with the closure. It's like
$a = array(
...
);
